Hakuba Valley Kashimayari Ski Resort offers three ski slope areas, and over 15 types of courses. The Long Downhill Course, oriented for advanced skiers/snowboarders, starts at a 1,550-meter elevation, and with a magnificent view from the summit.

The sunset as seen on a cloudless, sunny day looks almost mystical, and is an extraordinary sight available only to the people who can get to the summit. Racing down the snow while gazing out over the mountains looming in the distance, is the sort of refreshing experience you can’t get with any other sport.

We also recommend the Tree Run Course and the Nakaami Super Rinkan Course, which lets you go down the slopes while maneuvering between the trees of the forest. It’s a great experience to be able to feel the vastness of the great outdoors around you as you go about your skiing experience.

Shimashika Kids’ Park - an open play area for children

On the slopes of Hakuba Valley Kashimayari Ski Resort, there is a kids-only play area called Shimashika Kids’ Park. Head into the park, and you’ll be welcomed by the Hakuba Valley Kashimayari Ski Resort mascot, Shimashika Kashima-kun.

Try asking Shimashika Kashima-kun to come play with you, and he’ll go sled and play in the slides with you, and even let you take commemorative photos - so be sure to give him a holler.

The park also offers other fun activities that will let the kids have fun on their own, including a 50-meter, kids-only ski slope, as well as snow striders (bikes without pedals).

Almost every day, we see kids playing together and making friends with each other! And while they play, you - their parents and guardians - can go out and enjoy some skiing without having to worry about them.

Sleds and snow striders are rented out for free, and people are free to enter and exit whenever they want. It might be good to enter the park with your kids, then head out to the slopes when you see that your kids have gotten used to the environment.

Shinshu salmon and avocado rice bowl - a must-eat local specialty

Hakuba Valley Kashimayari Ski Resort is home to all kinds of ski resort cuisine, including Baskin Robbins and a crepe store - both very popular with both kids and adults - as well as the hot dog specialty store Double Mountain.

Of the many stores at this ski resort, the one we particularly want to recommend is a restaurant called Red Cedar, located in the Central Plaza.

They offer a ton of tantalizing options, from a special leek and katsu (cutlet) rice bowl, to the gap pad bai gaprow, available only for a limited time. Of the many dishes offered, the most popular is the Shinshu salmon avocado rice bowl - a local specialty.

This is a rice bowl topped liberally with Shinshu salmon, a brand of salmon that was developed over the course of ten years by the Nagano Prefectural Fisheries Experimental Station. This salmon has almost none of the fishiness you normally get from fish, and is thick, and so rich and smooth it almost melts in the mouth. It goes amazingly with the steaming hot rice and avocadoes, and will definitely keep you coming back for more!

They also offer a nozawana and minced-meat rice bowl (a Kashimayari original), made from a kind of minced meat known as soboro, and nozawana (pickled coleseed greens), a Nagano Prefecture specialty. Try it out!

Yukemuri-yashiki Yakushinoyu - perfect for your skiing day-trip

At an 18-minute drive away from Hakuba Valley Kashimayari Ski Resort, Yukemuri-yashiki Yakushinoyu is a bit far from the ski resort, but it’s definitely worth it.

The onsen water is slightly alkaline, and is said to be good for relieving nerve pain, muscle pain, joint pain, as well as fatigue, and improving general health.

The onsen will warm your body - chilled from skiing - and help ease all your aches and pains. After you bathe, you can also lie down and rest in the great hall - with its space of about 90 tatami mats or 139 square meters - or you can just daze off into the distance while looking at the scenery outside. Just relax in any way you want.

Yamanaka-kan is in a great location, at only a 3-minute drive away from Hakuba Valley Kashimayari Ski Resort. If you get tired from skiing, you can call it a day a bit early and head back to the inn to rest.

But the greatest thing about Yamanaka-kan is the fact that you can enjoy various home-grown, seasonal ingredients.

Many of the dishes they offer - the pride and joy of the master chef - make liberal use of the eggplants and rice grown in nearby fields, and are not available anywhere else.

All of the dishes are extraordinary, from the yosenabe (mixed stew), with its handmade tsukune (a kind of chicken meatloaf), to the Nagano specialty Shinshu soba, and the basashi (horse meat sashimi), which is popular locally. The basashi has a simple taste without any odor or strange flavors, and has a rich, smooth texture. We recommend you try it at least once.
