Some of the best snowfall ever! Geto Kogen Ski Resort brings the skiers to the yard

25 September, 2024
Located in Kitakami in Iwate Prefecture, “Geto Kogen Resort” is a ski resort which boasts one of the top levels of snowfall in Japan. The region is extremely cold with temperatures in winter reaching -5.2 degrees Celsius, resulting in dry powder snow with low moisture content falling continuously. Since it’s easy to turn in this fluffy snow by simply leaning the axis of the body slightly, even beginner skiers can ski without difficulty. Also, this ski resort is complete with onsen facilities which can be used by day trippers, as well as overnight accommodations. This convenience is another reason for such high popularity among many skiers.

When it comes to skiing, isn’t one of the pleasures having meals during breaks? Geto Kogen Resort is equipped with a large food court restaurant that boasts 1,000 seats. The food court offers unique Japanese menu items, such as Japanese curry - a staple dish of home cooking - as well as traditional Japanese cuisine registered on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

One particular choice recommended among the many restaurants is “Ramen Ichiba Osekkai Hachibei”. Did you know that Japanese ramen is also quite popular among overseas tourist guests?

The most popular choice is Osehachi Tonkotsu Ramen. The tonkotsu (pork bone) soup is generously topped with cloud ear mushrooms, thickly sliced barbequed pork and succulent bamboo shoots. The richly flavored soup and aroma of wheat noodles combine for an exquisite dish. Is there anything more blissful than hot ramen to warm up the cold?

Another feature of “Ramen Ichiba Osekkai Hachibei” is that there is none of that pork-boney smell, making it easy to eat.

Geto Kogen Onsen “Usagimori-no-Yu” which can also be used on day trips

What the onsen facilities may or may not look like
Skiing is a sport that uses the entire body, and you can become more fatigued than expected. If you want to wash off your sweat and become refreshed, we definitely recommend Geto Kogen Onsen’s “Usagimori-no-Yu”.

Spring water pumped up from 1,700 meters below ground used in the bath is low alkaline pure spring water. The spring water quality is said to have a high beautification effect on the skin, which feels silky smooth after getting out of the bath. It also has a positive effect on recovering from muscle pain and fatigue.

Why not soak in a spacious bath after skiing, and treat your tired body to a thoroughly relaxing experience? By the way, if you have a meal in the “Restaurant Usagimori” within the facility, you can get a 200 yen discount on the onsen entrance fee.

Compared with average rates at accommodation facilities near the ski resort - roughly 10,000 yen per adult per night - this is quite a reasonable price zone.
