Complete with a day-care center! Hakuba Cortina Ski Resort is packed full of services for everyone from adults to children to enjoy!

24 February, 2023
Hakuba Cortina Ski Resort, located in the northern area of Nagano Prefecture, is a ski resort where anyone from adults to small children, experienced skiers to beginners, can have fun and enjoy themselves. It boasts a full array of services, like snowmobile rental or the free snow activity area, that can be enjoyed with peace of mind even with children in tow. The resort also includes a day-care center - the fact that you can also leave your children with trained staff is probably one reason why this resort is gaining so much popularity among families. And there’s more: the hotel directly connected to the ski resort is fully equipped with onsen facilities and a sauna. The hot spring water that wells up from the foothills of the Northern Alps is good for healing fatigue and maintaining skin moisture. After working up a sweat on the slopes, it might be nice to loosen up and relax by immersing yourself in the baths.

Hakuba Cortina Ski Resort is 3 hours from Haneda Airport and 3 and a half hours from Narita Airport. If you take the Shinkansen from Tokyo Station, it takes only 1 hour and 20 minutes - not even 2 hours.

Moreover, there is even a shuttle bus you can ride for free running from the east gate of the closest station, Minami-Otari Station, to the resort. There are sometimes changes in the bus schedule due to weather, however, so you may want to check the schedule on the official website beforehand.

The gently-sloped beginner course, and the 40-degree inclined advanced course

Hakuba Cortina Ski Resort has a total of 16 courses. There’s plenty of variety in the courses, from the 200-meter wide beginners’ slope to the advanced skiers’ course which climbs to an elevation of 1,400 meters.

Also, one particularly distinctive characteristic is that the resort is laid out in a “pot shape”, with all the courses ending up at the middle of the resort. With this layout, even if your family or friends go off onto different courses, there’s no worry of losing each other.

Kids can enjoy the Cortina Wonder Village Kids’ Park

For children who easily get excited at the sight of snow, we particularly recommend Cortina Wonder Village Kids’ Park. In this plaza in front of the hotel, various activities available such as sledding on a range of different sleds, tubing (sliding downhill while riding on a tire), and snowmobiles for children are on offer.

Children can play in the snow in the free snow activity area to their hearts’ content, whether by sledding on their own toboggan, having a snowball fights, or making snowmen.

You can also enjoy a snowmobile ride in a vehicle designed to let you ride around on top of the snow. When you get off the snowmobile, you can walk around on and touch fresh, untouched snow - sure to be an experience completely different from skiing. Snowmobile rides are by reservation only, so remember to reserve your ride in advance.

To make a reservation, simply tell the hotel receptionist which of the four time slots you would like to reserve - 10:30am, 11:30am, 1:30pm or 2:30pm - and how many people will be riding, and your reservation is complete. The price is 1,800 yen for adults, 1,200 yen for children, and 600 yen for infants.

If you have children who are not old enough to be able to ski (from age 3 to 6), they can be left at the day-care center in front of the hotel, Kid’s House. It’s great to know that you can leave your children with the trained staff always on hand, for 1,000 yen per hour during their business hours of 9:00am - 12:00pm and 1:00pm - 5:00pm.

You can enjoy your skiing without worry knowing that the day-care center has play equipment, picture books, and so on, not to mention a rest area your children can use if they are tired. However, weekends tend to be crowded, so if you plan to use the day-care center on a weekend we recommend making a reservation in advance.

For lunch, we recommend the buffet at Restaurant Azumino

The buffet
For lunch, we recommend the lunch buffet at Restaurant Azumino, in the basement floor of the hotel. You can enjoy a rich variety of foods, both Western and Japanese, such as udon, pasta, curry, omelets, and chop suey.

Restaurant Azumino’s lunch buffet is an all-you-can-eat service with no time limit for 1,500 yen for men, 1,300 yen for women, and 800 yen for elementary school children, so families can take their time enjoying the meal. The appeal of the resort being directly connected to the hotel is that after eating your fill at lunch you have the freedom to choose whether to hit the slopes for some skiing or return to your room for a rest.

Experience pizza-making at Tea Lounge Lyrical

Pizza-making experience
In Tea Lounge Lyrical, on the first floor of the hotel, you can experience what it’s like to make pizza. Just choose a size from S, M, or L, add toppings to your liking such as onions, bacon, cheese, or corn, and place it in the special pizza oven to bake!

The price starts at 1,300 yen for a small pizza, which is a good size for when you’re feeling a bit hungry or would like a snack. The large size, on the other hand, might be just the right amount for your whole family to share. It’s most crowded during the hours around noon - 1pm, so past 3pm is a good time to aim for.
